TWISTED

The Angel Oak is a popular attraction near Charleston, South Carolina (photo taken in early November 2017).  Barely visible near the trunk, are my daughter and son-in-law, who went to visit for the day.  Presently the live oak tree is recovering from damage sustained during hurricane HUGO and appears to be healthy, but not as symmetrical as it was when this photo was taken in 2010.

In the Old Testament Scriptures, ‘oak’ is used 15 times in fourteen different verses, but the word is not used in the New Testament Scriptures at all.

Gen 35:4  And they gave unto Jacob all the strange gods which were in their hand, and all their earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem.

Note that idol worshippers often stored their idols under the oak trees.

Gen 35:8  “But Deborah Rebekah’s nurse died, and she was buried beneath Bethel under an oak: and the name of it was called Allonbachuth.”

This tree had a name and may well have been as revered as the one in South Carolina, where weddings and other ceremonies are frequently held.  So far burials are not allowed under the Angel Oak.

Jos 24:26  And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God, and took a great stone, and set it up there under an oak, that was by the sanctuary of the LORD.

Jdg 6:11  And there came an angel of the LORD, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

The Israelites were saved from enemy raiders after Gideon became involved.  His willingness to be used to deliver them was of special importance.

Jdg 6:19  And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it.

2Sa 18:9  And Absalom met the servants of David. And Absalom rode upon a mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that wasunder him went away.

With Absalom’s hair being his glory, it was also his destruction.  Maybe with this verse and the pictures of the oak we can visualize the whole scenario better.

2Sa 18:10  And a certain man saw it, and told Joab, and said, Behold, I saw Absalom hanged in an oak.

2Sa 18:14  Then said Joab, I may not tarry thus with thee. And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak.

1Ki 13:14  And went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak: and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am.

1Ch 10:12  They arose, all the valiant men, and took away the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh, and buried their bones under the oakin Jabesh, and fasted seven days.

Isa 1:30  For ye shall be as an oak whose leaf fadeth, and as a garden that hath no water.

Oak leaves fade and drop with the seasons.

Isa 6:13  But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it shall return, and shall be eaten: as a teil tree, and as an oak, whose substance is in them, when they cast their leaves: so the holy seed shall be the substance thereof.

Isa 44:14  He heweth him down cedars, and taketh the cypress and the oak, which he strengtheneth for himself among the trees of the forest: he planteth an ash, and the rain doth nourish it.

Eze 6:13  Then shall ye know that I am the LORD, when their slain men shall be among their idols round about their altars, upon every high hill, in all the tops of the mountains, and under every green tree, and under every thick oak, the place where they did offer sweet savour to all their idols.
